Three simple rules,

Stars in every row & column
Each row and column must contain exactly 1 or 2 stars, depending on the difficulty.
Stars in every region
Each colored area on the board must also have exactly 1 or 2 stars. Regions have irregular shapes — this is where logic begins.
Stars cannot touch
No two stars can be adjacent — even diagonally. Each star must be surrounded by eight empty cells (or the board edge).
Every puzzle has exactly one valid solution.
